During mid 80s, I made a move to work for Westinghouse Energy Company in Orlando. In Westinghouse, my involvement and focus shifted to manufacturing, testing, monitoring, maintenance and servicing of steam, gas, and generator products besides my core specialty as analyst. These opportunities groomed me with deep knowledge and understanding of products and processes at various stages of design and manufacturing. During this period, I was exposed to general automation processes in CNC machines, assembly issues alongside with monitoring of shaft vibration, and rotor balancing in the factory and on-site as well. The well-rounded exposure paved the way to grasping latest technologies applied industrywide into the early 2020s. I was fortunate to have such opportunities in large industrial manufacturers like Westinghouse and Siemens energy.
Throughout my carrier, I lectured on vibration diagnostics of machines to various industrial establishments, university staff and students. During my lectures, particularly, from 2018-2021, the audiences repeatedly suggested I should deliver lectures on digitalization aspects of design, manufacturing etc. This resulted into a course entitled, "Digitalization Aspects in Mechanical Systems". These lectures were well received with an overwhelming positive note. Later, I included Materials Engineering and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning) in the digitalization course. These lectures motivated and encouraged me in venturing a book on digitalization aspects in design, manufacturing, monitoring and maintenance of machines and other related processes as well.
Digitalization that I refer here is mostly about machine learning (ML) processes. ML also needs supporting platform or appropriate software to implement projects successfully. It became a steppingstone to DL (Deep Learning). Software such as Industry 4.0, PdM 4.0 etc. are associated when related projects are discussed. However, custom-made software for various processes and product designs, can be developed with Artificial Intelligence (AI) languages available currently in the marketplace. ML together with Wi-Fi enabled IoT (Internet of Things) forms a sound module for developing digital technology.
