Description

Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English writer and poet whose work explores issues such as sexuality, emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct, whilst reflecting upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. His opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in voluntary exile. Although best known for his novels, Lawrence wrote over 800 poems and this collection first published in 1923 contains some of his finest reflections on the "otherness" of the non-human world. He started the poems in this collection during a stay in San Gervasio near Florence in 1920 and continued working on individual poems in Taormina (Sicily), Ceylon and Australia before completing the book in February 1923 whilst staying in New Mexico.
