From boardrooms to newsrooms, from colleges to Congress, Jenny Foster is fast becoming the toast of Washington. As a personal-image consultant, she works miracles with her clients, turning the tongue-tied into public speakers and wallflowers into social butterflies. But her newest client, Steve Voight, is causing her problems. She thinks he's perfect just the way he is!

Steve has come to the nation's capital from the Midwest as a lobbyist for his fellow farmers, and he wants to fit in more with the politicians on the Hill. And though Jenny admires Steve's down-to-earth qualities, she agrees to help him polish his political skills. Together they're a smashing success. But it's the quiet times Jenny spends with the "real" Steve that she treasures most of all, and with Steve devoting so much energy to the farmers' cause, their quiet times seem to be fewer and farther between. Jenny is proud of the work Steve has done, but she's come to a disquieting conclusion: She may have done her job too well!

She sees the deep love between Hetty, a granddame in her eighties and Jenny's closest friend, and Hetty's newlywed husband. But, Jenny can't see that kind of love in her future.
