Death Doulas are ageless beings with one of the most important burdens of existence. They gather the spirits of the recently departed and carry them on their final journey. The first and most important characteristic of any death Doula, is that they are a bird.
Kanik doesn't know why she was chosen by her mentor, an ancient California condor named Nem, to be the first ever human death Doula. She does know that she loves her work. Nurtured by the guidance and friendship of Nem, she begins to understand the true nature of the multiverse, and the place of humans within it.
When the birds turn on humanity, Kanik finds herself torn between loyalty to her species, and loyalty to a mentor she adores. She thinks she knows what she wants, and then she's called to carry the soul of a young warrior, and everything changes.
