Description

""Dido, Queen of Carthage"" is a tragic play written by Christopher Marlowe in 1594, and published posthumously in 1598. The play is based on the story of Dido, the legendary Queen of Carthage, who falls in love with Aeneas, a Trojan prince who has been shipwrecked on her shores. Dido offers him refuge, and the two fall deeply in love. However, when the gods remind Aeneas of his destiny to found Rome, he feels compelled to leave Carthage and fulfill his duty. Dido is heartbroken and ultimately takes her own life. Marlowe's play explores themes of love, duty, and the conflict between personal desire and societal expectations. The 1825 edition of the play includes an introduction by the editor, as well as notes and commentary to aid in understanding the text. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
