Before she became the star known as Eartha Kitt, the girl of mixed race called Eartha Mae lived a constant nightmare, despairing of her life as an ugly « yella gal » who was unloved, unwanted and rejected while still a child. The later Eartha Kitt provided a striking contrast with that life when she was a self-assured American star in the fifties, even though the duality would remain permanent. She was larger than life : a dancer at 16, a star in Europe at 20, a disco queen in the seventies, and then a world-famous crooner until her passing in 2008.
