Description

Big game hunting was an iconic activity in British colonial Africa that has long been associated with the celebration of rugged, white manhood and imperial dominance over African people and landscapes. On the ground, however, the pursuit of game could look quite different. This book recovers the multiplicity of meanings and experiences embedded in colonial hunting by examining how African people leveraged British hunters' dependence on their labor and knowledge to direct the economic and social impacts of imperial hunting, and how they integrated it into African systems and networks. In addition, this book examines the experience and representation of British women hunters. By analyzing hunting as it was practised on the ground and represented in Britain by a broad range of actors, Hunting Africa sheds new light on the gendering of imperial hunting, the power it symbolized, and the image of Africa promoted through it.
