Ins Archiv hören ist eine systematische Untersuchung von historischen Tonaufnahmen als Quellen zur Kolonialgeschichte. Tonaufnahmen, die in kolonialen Archiven liegen, werden bis heute vor allem als Sprach- und Klangbeispiele behandelt. Es ist an der Zeit, die Erzählungen, die kritischen Kommentare, die Positionen der Sprecher-innen zu hören. Dies geschieht in diesem Buch mithilfe Übersetzungen von Sprachaufnahmen aus der Kalahari von 1908, die der österreichische Anthropologe Rudolf Pöch nach Wien gebracht hat. Die Aufnahmen werden im Zusammenhang von kolonialen Praktiken der Wissensproduktion und des gewaltsamen "Sammelns" von Objekten gehört und gelesen. Der Band erscheint in der Theoriereihe Analysis & Excess.

Listening into the Archive is a systematic analysis of historical sound recordings as sources of colonial history. Audio recordings held in colonial archives are still principally treated as language and sound samples. The time has now come to listen to the narratives, the critical comments, and the positions adopted by the speakers. This book approaches this task by drawing on translations of voice recordings made in the Kalahari in 1908 and brought to Vienna by Austrian anthropologist Rudolf Pöch. The recordings are listened to and read in the context of colonial practices of knowledge production and the violent "collecting" of objects. The volume forms part of the series of theoretical works Analysis & Excess.
