Nassau County was born at an auspicious and exciting time, on the cusp of a new century and a major transition from a series of quiet farming communities to a hub for industry, a playground for the rich, a training ground for soldiers heading to war, and a cradle for the nascent aviation industry that was to result in the most famous flight in the nation's history. Much has changed over time in Nassau County--farms have vanished, new highways have been built, historic buildings and sites have been obliterated, and housing developments and shopping centers of all types and sizes have sprung up.
