Raised to believe it's wrong to kill anything sentient, Felicia Shepherd is a pest controller who only uses non-lethal means to manage the swarms of rats and roaches plaguing her city - and that worked well enough until they started talking to her. As if that weren't enough, she's also wrestling with a growing suspicion that her mother, who disappeared after a horrible accident with a neural implant, isn't actually dead.
