Description

Posthumous Fragments of Margaret Nicholson is a collection of poems written by Percy Bysshe Shelley and published in 1810. The poems were allegedly found amongst the papers of Margaret Nicholson, a woman who attempted to assassinate King George III in 1786. The collection includes a preface by Shelley, in which he describes the circumstances of Nicholson's life and her failed attempt on the King's life. He suggests that the poems were written by Nicholson during her confinement in a mental institution following the assassination attempt. The poems themselves are a mix of styles and themes, including political satire, religious allegory, and personal reflection. They explore Nicholson's experiences of confinement and persecution, as well as her sense of isolation and alienation from society. The collection is notable for its use of Gothic imagery and themes, and for its exploration of the psychological and emotional states of its protagonist. It is considered an important early work in Shelley's career, and a significant contribution to the Romantic literary tradition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
