The Lancashire market town of Preston boomed during the Industrial Revolution to become a major textile manufacturing center. The population soared as families came to work in the cotton mills and the town spread rapidly. New housing, churches, and civic buildings were constructed, and industries such as engineering clustered in the town. The downturn in textile manufacturing in the 20th century hit Preston although alleviated by the other industries and in common with many towns and cities in the country regeneration in the postwar decades entailed the loss of a significant part of the old and familiar fabric of Preston, or its redevelopment into different uses.
