"How I have craved thee these long hours," said Erin in a low voice.
Salia swallowed hard, now alone with Erin, who was looking at her as if she would devour her. The knight was in full armor, but that didn't seem to stop her. Eyes fixed on Salia's face, she removed her gauntlets, tossing them aside, and then she grabbed the back of Salia's neck and crushed her mouth to Salia's in a hungry kiss.

"You should think to please your mother and the gods," went on Nurse Wene, "and find a good prince and wed him, as is natural and right --"
"Nurse Wene!" Salia said loudly, and the old woman – confused that her rant had been interrupted – halted in surprise and looked around at Salia. Salia smiled through the mirror at the old woman as she said, "Get the fuck out."
The old nurse's face turned beet red and something between shock and outrage spread her expression. Never, in Salia's entire twenty years as princess, had the nurse ever been dismissed so coldly. But traveling with the Broin sisters had made Salia finally realize that she wasn't beholden to anyone. In fact, she could do as she pleased – not without consequences but in spite of them. The nurse would no doubt go running to the queen, but for the first time in her life, Salia didn't care.
Salia's three ladies in waiting had all paused in just as much shock. They were young and quite short and in terror of the old nurse, who had often wielded power over them like a tyrant. They were in awe that Salia had dared to stand up to her and exchanged wide-eyed expressions, their mouths hanging open.
"I beg your pardon, your majesty?!" Nurse Wene finally managed to sputter.
"Oh. I forget you're hard of hearing." Salia smiled into the mirror and leaned forward as she repeated, "Get the fuck out."

Moirin laughed girlishly. Standing beside Aereth and looking so pleased and content, she was so bright with joy that Salia was torn between happiness and amazement. As she recalled it, Moirin had only ever laughed when people were being slain.

Idet looked down on Kamryn and Fara with great dislike. "Well?" she sneered. "Have you anything to say in your defense?"
"We love Salia," Kamryn said at once. "We would do anything to make her happy."
"We would die for her," said Fara solemnly.
"But you wouldn't understand that," added Kamryn, "for you can not die."
--
Fara gazed down at Salia warmly, but her eyes filled with guilt as she said, "Erin is right about us, Salia. We are dogs and little more. We both have betrayed you with numerous women, yet you have forgiven us—"
"No, I took revenge," laughed Salia, "by laying with Idet and placing your fate in her hands. You had to journey to her realm and beg for her aid, which hath pleased me greatly. And now we are even."
Fara laughed weakly. "Fair enough."
