Description

Schiller's Mary Stuart is a play written by Friedrich Schiller and first published in 1800. The play is based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, and focuses on her imprisonment and eventual execution by her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England. The play explores themes of power, politics, and religion, as well as the relationship between the two queens. The play is divided into five acts and features a cast of historical figures, including Lord Burleigh, Earl of Leicester, and Mary's third husband, the Earl of Bothwell. Schiller's Mary Stuart is considered one of the greatest works of German literature and has been adapted into numerous operas, films, and plays. This edition of the play was published in 1898 and includes an introduction by the translator, William Peterfield Trent. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
