Description

Sophonisba, Or Hannibals Overthrow: A Tragedy is a play written by Nathaniel Lee and first published in 1704. The play is set during the Second Punic War and revolves around the historical figure of Sophonisba, the daughter of Hasdrubal, who is promised in marriage to Syphax, the king of Numidia. However, she falls in love with the Carthaginian general Hannibal, who is leading the war against Rome.As the war intensifies, Sophonisba is forced to marry Syphax to secure his alliance with Carthage. However, Hannibal manages to win Syphax over to his side, and the two lovers are reunited. The play ends tragically, with Sophonisba choosing to take her own life rather than be taken captive by the Romans.Lee's play is known for its dramatic intensity and powerful language, as well as its exploration of themes such as love, loyalty, and the devastating consequences of war. It remains a classic of English literature and a testament to Lee's skill as a playwright. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
