The principal theme of "Spiritual Pathways" is the significance of the metaphysical soul. It is based on a spiritual diary kept by the writer. The book reveals how these ideas have developed; thus it is an existential work, reflective of the writer's individuality and situation. Whereas Richard Schain's book "Souls Exist, 2nd ed." (2013) dealt with a similar theme within standard philosophical format, the current work more forcefully delivers the substance of his thought and extends it. The writing explores the reasons why awareness of the soul hardly exists in contemporary society. Initially, Schain wrestles with the formula of faith in God through grace, which is fundamental to Christianity. Gradually, the realization emerges in him that the experience of religious revelation really reflects emergence of consciousness of one's own soul rather than of an all-powerful, big brother deity. Metaphysical (spiritual) consciousness in its broadest sense is set forth as the principal goal of human self-development. Other goals are considered secondary. Schain believes that he writes in service of his own interior development. Readers may utilize the ideas proposed as they see fit for their own purposes. A metaphysical consciousness and freedom of thought are essential for appreciation of this writing.
