The Aeneid of Virgil is an epic poem written by the Roman poet Virgil in the first century BC. The poem tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan prince who travels to Italy and becomes the ancestor of the Roman people. The poem is divided into twelve books and follows Aeneas as he faces numerous challenges and battles, including the wrath of the gods, the jealousy of other heroes, and the enmity of the native Italian tribes. Along the way, Aeneas encounters a variety of characters, including the sorceress Dido, the warrior Turnus, and the gods themselves. The Aeneid is considered one of the greatest works of Latin literature and has had a profound influence on Western literature and culture.
