The Deliverance: A Romance of the Tobacco Fields is a novel written by Ellen Glasgow. The book is set in the early 20th century and follows the story of Gideon Vetch, a wealthy and ambitious man who comes to live in the small town of Kingsborough, Virginia. Vetch is determined to become a successful tobacco farmer and to marry the beautiful and wealthy heiress, Dorinda Oakley. However, his plans are disrupted when he meets the intelligent and independent Jenny Blair, a young woman who works in the tobacco fields. As Vetch becomes more involved in the community, he begins to see the harsh realities of life in the tobacco fields, including the exploitation of workers and the destruction of the land. He also becomes increasingly drawn to Jenny and her ideals, which challenge his own values and ambitions. Meanwhile, Dorinda becomes jealous of Vetch's growing attachment to Jenny and plots to ruin their relationship. The Deliverance explores themes of love, ambition, social class, and the struggle for justice in a changing world. Glasgow's vivid descriptions of the tobacco fields and the people who work there bring the setting to life, while her nuanced characters and complex relationships make for a compelling and thought-provoking read.1904. Glasgow's realistic fiction novels often showed the female characters as stronger than the male characters. It was this new type of Southern fiction that made Ellen Glasgow one of the major writers of her time. The vantage point from which most of her nineteen novels were written was her native home of Richmond, Virginia. She received the Pulitzer prize in 1942 for In This Our Life. In 1900, with the publication of The Voice of the People, Glasgow began a series of novels which came to compose her ambitious fictional social history of Virginia. This series includes The Battle Ground, a Civil War novel, and this volume, The Deliverance, which tells of the aftermath of the Civil War, when the Southern social order underwent wrenching change.
