The United Planetary Commission of Earth returned to the stars to reclaim their rebellious colonies. A young rebel interferes with their plans. Randal Tarsal grew up on the former colony of Springfold, a planet his ancestors helped settle two centuries before his birth. Leaving his home, he joined the Interplanetary Guard, a police and rescue force. Taken prisoner after his ship was destroyed, he is able, with the help of fellow prisoners, to overpower their guards and steal a ship. The ragtag crew attacks a UPC base and escape to join the remnants of the Guard on the only planet not invaded by the UPC. Advanced in rank to Commander, he is given command of the ship he named Freedom.

Living in a peaceful era, the Alliance was ill-prepared to fight a war. Randal and his fellow captains must learn quickly if they are going to save the Alliance and drive out the invaders. 320page
