The protagonist, Nuri Bey, is a young Turkish officer who is sent to Paris to study military tactics. While in Paris, he falls in love with a French woman named Marguerite. However, their love is cut short when Nuri is called back to Istanbul to serve in the Sultan's army. Back in Istanbul, Nuri is assigned to be the Sultan's personal guard. He quickly realizes the corruption and brutality of the Sultan's regime and becomes disillusioned with his own role in it. Meanwhile, Marguerite travels to Istanbul to be with Nuri but finds herself caught up in the political turmoil of the time. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and political unrest. It provides a vivid portrayal of life in the Ottoman Empire during a tumultuous period of its history.
