Description

The Hermit of Livry is a historical fiction novel written by Emma Leslie and published in 1877. The story is set in the 16th century in France during the time of John Calvin, a prominent leader of the Protestant Reformation. The protagonist of the story is a hermit named Claude, who lives in a secluded cave in the forest of Livry. He is a devout Christian who has renounced the world and its pleasures. The story begins with Claude receiving a visit from a young nobleman named Gaston, who is fleeing from the authorities after being accused of heresy. Claude takes Gaston in and helps him hide from the authorities. As they spend time together, Gaston learns about Claude's life and the reasons for his seclusion. Meanwhile, the authorities are searching for Gaston, and Claude must use all his wits to keep him safe. Along the way, they encounter various characters, including a group of Huguenots (French Protestants) who are also being persecuted. The novel explores themes of faith, persecution, and the struggle between Catholicism and Protestantism in 16th century France. It is a gripping tale of survival and friendship in a time of great turmoil. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
