Agnes is in love with a man named Don Manuel, but her family arranges for her to enter a convent instead of marrying him. Agnes takes her vows as a nun, but she is not happy in the convent and eventually breaks her vow of chastity by having an affair with Don Manuel. The novel explores themes of love, duty, and the conflict between personal desires and societal expectations. The History of the Nun or The Fair Vow Breaker is considered one of Behn's most controversial works due to its depiction of a nun breaking her vows and engaging in sexual activity.
