Description
For decades in the Home-Land Tor Ovos, women were taken away to a special place and forced to breed. They gave birth, they reared each infant for two years, and for a decade and a half of their lives, they could not leave. Only in their thirty-years would they settle in their own home, with a husband and their allocated offspring born of some younger woman still there, in the Forest of Kar.
Nowadays, of course, it is hard to imagine.
Thanks to the Overturning, the revolution that created the Federation Tor Ovos 100 years ago, the horrors of the Home-Land era are now far in the past. Women are no longer confined to the Forest Zone for the whole of their fertile years, and the country's minorities are no longer suppressed. Crowds have gathered in the capital for the centenary celebrations, and they will hear a speech by Ceryx Greenhood, great great grandson of Elahor, "Keyholder of the Overturning." History records Elahor's crucial, heroic betrayal of the despised patriarchal regime he once served - but what if there has been something wrong with history all this time? Now that a century has gone by, might the unfolding of that tumultuous year need to be rewritten?
