This present time is similar to the period Elijah the prophet lived in. Under the rulership of King Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, the Northern part of Israel had turned away from God to idolatry like the world today has turned away from God and His will. God had been pushed out of their daily lives and replaced with foreign god worship. Those who stood for God were heavily persecuted and killed. You find the same happening in society today: churches being told to close up in certain places, God and Jesus Christ being removed from the world's systems, and thick persecution of believers in many parts of the world.
