When eight-year-old Charley Spencer finds the mutilated body of her dead mother in the cellar one afternoon, homicide detective Lucinda Pierce is brought in to find the woman's killer. Lucinda is a dogged detective whose life is her work, particularly after being both physically and emotionally scarred as the result of a routine call-out that turned violent. She feels drawn in by Charley and her pain and is determined to solve the mystery of Dr. Spencer's brutal murder particularly after meeting Charley's father, the enigmatic and mysterious Evan Spencer. However, when links are discovered with other recent violent murders, Lucinda finds herself becoming emotionally involved-- and in deep personal danger.
