Published in 1866, "The United States During the Civil War of 1861-1865" by Auguste Laugel (1830-1914), a French historian and engineer is an eyewitness account of the United States during the upheaval of the American Civil War.
Laugel, a noted historian who published many renowned books on historical subjects, traveled in the Union States during 1864 & 1865. He was on intimate terms with Union officials, both government & military, even conferring with President Lincoln as well as Lincoln's cabinet members, leaders of the Republican Party like Charles Sumner, & General Grant, on the conduct of the war.
As a European observer, Laugel gives a fascinating picture of life in the North at this time as well as a general view of the war's progress from its start through the period of his wanderings in 1864-65. This "travelogue" sets the book apart from the run-of-the-mill book, either American or foreign, that usually concentrates on the storm & carnage of the battles. His opening chapters on the causes of the struggle from an outsider's viewpoint & his later chapter on how the Union managed to finance the long struggle also moves this book beyond the ordinary Civil War book.
For both the serious student of the Civil war as well as the general interested reader, this classic book is a must read for insights into the course of the war, its effect on the common people, & its influence on the views of Europe during the long struggle.
