Description

Whittier Land: A Handbook of North Essex Containing Many Anecdotes of and Poems by John Greenleaf Whittier is a book written by Samuel T. Pickard. The book is a comprehensive guide to the region of North Essex, which was the birthplace and childhood home of the famous American poet John Greenleaf Whittier. The book contains numerous anecdotes and stories about Whittier's life and work, as well as a collection of his poems that were inspired by the landscape and people of North Essex. The poems are accompanied by detailed descriptions of the places and events that inspired them, providing readers with a deeper understanding of Whittier's creative process and the cultural and historical context in which he lived. In addition to the biographical and literary content, Whittier Land also serves as a travel guide to North Essex, providing readers with information about the region's natural beauty, historic landmarks, and cultural attractions. The book includes detailed maps, photographs, and illustrations, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in exploring this fascinating corner of New England.Overall, Whittier Land is a rich and engaging book that offers a unique perspective on the life and work of one of America's most beloved poets, as well as a comprehensive guide to the region that inspired him.1904. Illustrated with Map and Engravings. This volume is designed to meet a call from tourists who are visiting the Whittier shrines at Haverhill and Amesbury in numbers that are increasing year by year. Besides describing the ancestral homestead and its surroundings, and the home at Amesbury, an attempt is made to answer such questions as naturally arise in regard to the localities mentioned by Whittier in his ballads of the region. Many anecdotes of the poet and several poems by him are now first published. It is with some hesitancy that I have ventured to add a chapter upon a phase of his character that has never been adequately presented: I refer to his keen sense of humor. It will be understood that none of the impromptu verses I have given to illustrate his playful moods were intended by him to be seen outside a small circle of friends and neighbors. This playfulness, however, was so much a part of his character from boyhood to old age that I think it deserves some record such as is here given. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
