Description

Wieland or The Transformation is a novel written by Charles Brockden Brown, first published in 1798. It is a gothic novel that tells the story of a family living in Pennsylvania in the late 18th century. The protagonist, Clara Wieland, is a young woman who is haunted by strange voices and visions. Her brother, Theodore Wieland, is a devout Christian who believes he is receiving messages from God. When Theodore's wife and children are murdered in their home, he becomes convinced that God has commanded him to kill his sister and her family. The novel explores themes of religious fanaticism, mental illness, and the supernatural. It is considered one of the earliest examples of American gothic literature and has been praised for its psychological depth and suspense. In a state thus verging upon madness, my eye glanced upon Carwin. His astonishment appeared to have struck him motionless and dumb. My life was in danger, and my brother's hand was about to be embrued in my blood. I firmly believed that Carwin's was the instigation. I could rescue me from this abhorred fate; I could dissipate this tremendous illusion. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
