Zu ihnen gehören »Der Mensch denkt, Gott lenkt«, »Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall« und »Der Geist ist willig, aber das Fleisch ist schwach«. Im Deutschen hat vor allem die volkstümliche Lutherbibel zur Verbreitung von Sprichwörtern beigetragen. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt 150 Sprichwörter der Lutherbibel vor. Sie erklärt ihre Bedeutung im Zusammenhang des Bibeltextes und verdeutlicht ihren Einfluss auf die deutsche Sprache an Beispielen aus den Bereichen Belletristik, Lieddichtung, Philosophie und Geschichte.

They reflect mentalities and points of view, explain, instruct, confirm, convince, admonish and warn. The Bible contains a number of well-known proverbs that are still in circulation today. These include »Der Mensch denkt, Gott lenkt«, »Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall« and »Der Geist ist willig, aber das Fleisch ist schwach«. In German, the popular Luther Bible in particular contributed to the spread of proverbs. This work presents 150 proverbs from the Luther Bible. It explains their meaning in the context of the biblical text and illustrates their influence on the German language with examples from literary works (fiction, song poetry, philosophy, and history).
