They attempt to woo two women, Lady Charlotte and Lady Harriet, who are also pretending to be someone else. Lady Charlotte is pretending to be a shepherdess, while Lady Harriet is pretending to be a gypsy. The play is full of mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and humorous situations. It satirizes the social norms and conventions of the time, particularly the pretensions of the aristocracy.
