Description

This article overviews an indigenous culture's design approach: New Zealand Māori.

I draw a parallel between the cultural and spiritual approach of Māori design and the conventional Western design perspective. This exploration unveils the Māori people's unique worldview and their distinctive design philosophy. Additionally, I compare Māori Design Principles and general design principles to identify commonalities and differences.

I delve into the realm of patterns, specifically focusing on the Flounder Fish pattern, characterised by its diamond shape. I also examine modern New Zealand architectural structures that incorporate this particular pattern, showcasing the fusion of tradition and contemporary design.

My exploration extends to abstract design concepts and architectural ideas, drawing inspiration from Māori abstract art. I touch on how these concepts can be integrated into architectural projects, giving rise to innovative and culturally significant designs.

Lastly, I discuss the utilisation of artificial intelligence for design ideas, with a spotlight on Playground AI. I present captivating design images generated by Playground AI, featuring the Māori Flounder Fish pattern as the central theme. The AI prompt explicitly sought a design for a modern, contemporary house infused with Māori shapes, forms, and patterns.

This resource culminates in a visually striking and awe-inspiring design that should not be missed, celebrating the synthesis of Māori culture and contemporary design.

For Designers, artists, architects, and Design and Visual Communication (DVC) students.
