Description

Scenes from Euripides: Bacchae is a play written by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides in 405 BC. The play tells the story of the god Dionysus, who returns to his homeland of Thebes to punish the city's ruler, Pentheus, for denying his divinity. The play explores themes of religion, gender, and power as Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility, leads a group of women known as the Bacchae in a frenzied celebration of his worship. The play is known for its vivid and violent imagery, as well as its exploration of the limits of human reason and the dangers of denying the gods. Scenes from Euripides: Bacchae was first translated into English in 1885 by the classicist Gilbert Murray, and has since become a classic of Western literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
