Sophia, a 23-year-old college student, keeps to herself and tries not to be noticed. On September 28th, an attack occurred, multiple bombs exploded in UCD, and the world went quiet because of EMPed. Sophia decides to head home from Winters, Ca to St Helena, Ca on foot. A mad man invites her in and gravely injures her. She must push herself to her ultimate limit. She disguises herself, hoping to pass as a boy, and sets out. After days of walking, she stumbles and discovers she is losing blood. She decides to break into the first house she sees for supplies. Someone she knows is inside. Cameron, from her old life, believes she is a boy named Sam. He is determined to befriend Sam and realizes he is very sick from his leg wound. After a sleep, Sophia tries to leave, but the infection stops her.
Cameron tries to help what he thinks is a boy, only to discover it is Sophia, a girl he had noticed and liked. He treats her systemic infection. Once she is better, she reveals she cares for him also. She struggles to get better, and soon the two are inseparable. Sophia says she was trying to go home, and soon they are preparing a trip to her old residence. Will they return unharmed?
