Faszination an der Verrätselung der Welt
In seiner Werkserie Silly Symphonies beschaftigt sich David Moses (geb. 1983 in Bonn; lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) mit der gleichnamigen Walt-Disney-Zeichentrickfilmreihe aus den Jahren 1929-1939. 14 der insgesamt 75 Filme liegen Moses' Malereien zugrunde. Zu jedem von ihnen schuf er seit 2017 eigene Serien. Dabei zerlegt der Künstler ausgewahlte Standbilder und lasst fragmentierte Figuren in Pastellkreide auf leuchtenden Farbflachen auf den großformatigen Leinwanden auftauchen.
Es überlappen sich abstrakte Farbfelder und wirbelnde Schraffierungen mit Comicaugen, Pfoten und aufgerissenen Mündern, dazwischen ein Farbnebel. Die Titel - Moses codiert seine Werke mittels Chiffren und Buchstaben sowie Minutenangaben zu den ausgesuchten Standbildern - verweisen bereits auf die Distan- zierung des Künstlers von der affrmativen Kraft der Comics. Was bleibt, sind Ausschnitte der Figuren als asthetische Ankerpunkte, als lose Fragmente in einer ansonsten abstrakten Malerei. Moses befreit seine Held*innen von den padagogischen wie kulturgeschichtlichen Implikationen durch Farbe, Linie, Ubermalung und Ausradierung. Es geht ihm nicht um die Handlungen seiner filmischen Vorlagen. Vielmehr ist es die Theatralik der Figuren, die den Künstler zu seinen archivalischen Auseinandersetzungen inspiriert.
Der Katalog erscheint anlasslich der Ausstellung Dirt Track bei der Galerie Russi Klenner in Berlin. Mit einem Essay von Larissa Kikol und einem Künstlergesprach zwischen David Moses und Linda Peitz.
A Fascinating Mystification of the World
David Moses's (b. Bonn, 1983; lives and works in Berlin) series Silly Symphonies is an extended study of the string of animated short films of the same title produced by the Walt Disney Studios between 1929 and 1939. For the project begun in 2017, Moses chose 14 of the altogether 75 films, probing each in a dedicated body of paintings. Dismantling selected frames into their components, the artist's large-format canvases feature fragmented figures in pastels on luminous color fields.
Areas of abstract composition in solid hues and swirling hachures overlap with comic-strip eyes, paws, and wide-open mouths; a tinted haze wafts over the me le e. The titles-Moses encodes his works with alphanumeric keys and timestamps for the selected frames-already suggest the artist's skepticism concerning the affirmative power of animation. What remains are snippets of characters as aesthetic anchors, disjected members loosely embed- ded in otherwise abstract painting. Through color, line, overpainting, and facement, Moses relieves his heroes and heroines of their pedagogical tenor and cultural-historical baggage. Rather than the plots of his filmic sources, it is the theatricality of the characters that inspires the artist in his engaging expeditions into the media archive.
The catalogue is released on occasion of the exhibition Dirt Track at Galerie Russi Klenner, Berlin. With an essay by Larissa Kikol and a conversation between David Moses and Linda Peitz.
