A knight is charged to save the life of a cursed nobleman by finding a cleric with a pure heart who will journey to a distant castle and perform a "simple ceremony." He fails at first but soon recruits a lusty elf warrior priestess, a female barbarian shaman, a novice druid girl, and a royal bastard dwarf. Together they travel through the land battling enemy warriors and monsters using weapons and magic. Ivy, the druid, grows her powers and does most of the magic. When the group reaches the village surrounding the castle, the dwarf uses his skill to take over the brewery and make dwarven ale for a celebration at the castle. Once in the castle, the adventurers find the Well of Souls and battle demons to abate the curse. The curse is over, but there is still work to be done, especially for Ivy. She becomes the king's seer, his close advisor. She marries the dwarf, has a son, and returns to the dwarven kingdom where she has to solve two murders before her husband is also murdered. She finds this society places little value on women because only men can become warriors. She works her magic to increase the worth of women and convinces the king to send his daughters to become Druids who can join the men in protecting their kingdom
