Sketched by artists who were at the scene when these momentous events unfolded, these graphic illustrations span the entire war chronologically, from the opening shots fired at Fort Sumter in 1861; the battles of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg; the war in the West and the fall of Vicksburg to Grant's overland campaign, Sherman's destruction of Atlanta, and the Confederate surrender at Appomattox in 1865. Supplementary sections present views of the naval war and activities on the home fronts in both the North and the South.
