THE EARLIER AND LATER WORK OF TITIAN
By Claude Phillips
This is a fully illustrated reprint of two classic books by Claude Phillips, former Keeper of the Wallace Collection in London, on the art and long life of one of the greatest artists in history, Titian Vecelli. This book combines Phillips' two volumes on Titian, the earlier work and the later work.
The art of Titian spans the whole of the Italian Renaissance, moving through many visual styles, ending up with a striking use of broken colour that looks forward to Impressionism. Titian created the full range of Renaissance artforms, including portraits, self-portraits, mythological and historical subjects, religious pictures, altarpieces, and many important commissions.
The book (first published in 1898) is illustrated by works from the later career of Titian's lengthy and remarkable life. There is also a section on Titian's contemporaries.
