Description

The Gambler and Other Stories is a collection of short stories written by the renowned Russian author, Fyodor Dostoevsky. The book includes the titular story, The Gambler, which tells the tale of a young tutor who becomes addicted to gambling and falls in love with a wealthy woman. The other stories in the collection include White Nights, A Disgraceful Affair, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, and Bobok. White Nights follows a lonely dreamer who falls in love with a woman he meets on the streets of St. Petersburg, but is unable to confess his feelings. A Disgraceful Affair tells the story of a man who discovers his wife's infidelity and is forced to confront the consequences of his own actions. The Dream of a Ridiculous Man is a philosophical tale about a man who experiences a spiritual awakening after attempting suicide. Finally, Bobok is a satirical story about a man who overhears the conversations of the dead in a cemetery. Throughout the collection, Dostoevsky explores themes such as love, addiction, morality, and the human condition. The Gambler and Other Stories is a thought-provoking and engaging read that showcases Dostoevsky's mastery of the short story form.1923. Dostoevsky, Russian novelist, is considered one of the most outstanding and influential writers of modern literature. Two of the stories, The Gambler, which concerns a young man who frequents the fashionable spas and casinos of Germany; and Poor People consisting of a series of love-letters exchanged between two poor folk whose lives are spent amid the slums of St. Petersburg each ends with a hint of tragedy. The third story included in this volume is The Landlady.
