Every day is the same.
Sixteen-year-old, castaway Kara McKenzie is about to finish her junior year of high school, and yet she feels more depressed than excited. Her mom is in support of her joining the scientists at The Lab. Her dad keeps avoiding the long conversation about her future. Her little brother, well, he's probably going to end up dead at the hands of the city's evil Governess. And her best friend, oh right, he died five years ago leaving her to navigate the shattered remains of her life. Kara is desperate to find some purpose to her life.
The week before the finals, her teacher tells her she's failing. Her only hope is to ace the final or end up in reform school: a military camp that's the leading cause of death for kids her age. Cue Ryan Wilson, the school bad boy, the one with the shortest fuse you wouldn't believe. This anger-management-dropout is the only chance she has at survival. Until she discovers he harbors a secret even more dangerous then hers.
Kara isn't sure what's more terrifying. The future that could get her killed, or the boy who could take everything from her.
