Description

Their Wedding Journey is a novel written by William Dean Howells, published in 1871. The story follows the newlywed couple, Kenyon and Ellen, as they embark on their honeymoon journey across the United States. The couple's journey takes them from Boston to Niagara Falls, then through the Midwest to the Rockies, and finally to San Francisco. Along the way, they encounter a variety of characters and situations that challenge their beliefs and perceptions of the world, including a group of spiritualists, a wealthy industrialist, and a group of Native Americans. The novel explores themes of marriage, class, and cultural differences as the couple navigates their journey and their relationship. Their Wedding Journey is considered a significant work in American literary realism and is praised for its vivid descriptions of the American landscape and its insightful portrayal of the complexities of human relationships.1871. Howells was an American realist author. He wrote for various magazines including Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Magazine. His career blossomed after the publication of his first realist novel, A Modern Instance. The book begins: They first met in Boston, but the match was made in Europe, where they afterwards saw each other; wither, indeed, he followed her; and there the match was also broken off. Why it was broken off, and why it was renewed after a lapse of years, is part of quite a long love-story, which I do not think myself qualified to rehearse, distrusting my fitness for a sustained or involved narration; though I am persuaded that a skillful romancer could turn the courtship of Basil and Isabel March to excellent account.
