Description

Agamemnon is a Greek tragedy written by Aeschylus in 1879. The play is the first of a trilogy called The Oresteia, which also includes The Libation Bearers and The Eumenides. It tells the story of Agamemnon, the king of Argos, who returns home after ten years of fighting in the Trojan War. However, his homecoming is far from peaceful, as he is met with betrayal, revenge, and murder. The play begins with the Chorus of Argive elders, who express their anxiety about Agamemnon's return and the possibility of his wife, Clytemnestra, seeking revenge for their daughter Iphigenia's sacrifice. Agamemnon arrives with his prisoner, the Trojan princess Cassandra, whom he plans to marry. However, Clytemnestra has been plotting his downfall and welcomes him with false hospitality, leading him into a trap. She kills him and Cassandra in revenge for Iphigenia's death and her own mistreatment by Agamemnon. The play explores themes of justice, revenge, and the consequences of violence. It also examines the roles of women in Greek society, as Clytemnestra takes on a traditionally male role of seeking revenge for her daughter's death. Overall, Agamemnon is a powerful and thought-provoking play that continues to be studied and performed today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
