In the wilds of Texas, La Loba runs at night. She has healing powers and an attitude toward abusers of children. By day, she is Sergeant Riley Redd, a Dallas homicide detective. At night, she transforms into a powerful shape-shifting wolf-creature of auburn hair and dazzling yellow eyes. As she realizes the extent of her new abilities, she longs to be free of her human life. She puts off leaving the ordinary world of humans, feeling the pressure of something left undone. When Max Regal shows up, she is sadly aware that he is the unfinished business.

Max is the essence of deceit and evil, torturing and killing for pleasure. Riley has to stop him but Max begins his own monstrous transformation by feeding from her strength. He claims they are the same. She delays killing him, hoping to prove him wrong, and learns more than she ever wanted to know.
