Description

""Lodore"" is a novel written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, published in 1835. The story follows the life of a young woman named Cornelia Lodore, who is forced to marry a man named Edward Villiers at a young age. The couple has a daughter, but their marriage is unhappy and Edward abandons them.Cornelia is left to raise their daughter, Ethel, on her own and struggles to provide for them both. She eventually meets and falls in love with a man named George Herbert, who helps her financially and emotionally. However, their happiness is short-lived as George dies suddenly, leaving Cornelia and Ethel alone once again. The novel explores themes of love, loss, and the challenges faced by women in the 19th century. It also touches on political issues of the time, including the struggle for Irish independence and the role of women in society.Overall, ""Lodore"" is a poignant and thought-provoking novel that showcases Shelley's talent for storytelling and her insight into the human condition. It was, perhaps, strange that Fitzhenry, alive to the smallest evil that might approach his darling child, and devoted to her sole guardianship, should have been blind to the sort of danger which she ran during his absence. But the paternal protection is never entirely efficient. A father avenges an insult; but he has seldom watchfulness enough to prevent it. In the present instance, the extreme youth of Ethel might well serve as an excuse. She was scarcely fifteen; and, light-hearted and blithe, none but childish ideas had found place in her unruffled mind. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
