Before I took part in the beginnings of the Supports/Surfaces group and became.a teacher, I was a construction painter In the morning to put food on the tableland an artist In the afternoon (1966-1974). I have always refused to work more than part-time to earn a living. I told my clients that I had two work sites and that I couldn't work for them in the afternoons. I have always adapted my lifestyle to that arrangement. My dream as an artist wasn't to get rich, but to try to remain free and to create what I wanted the way I wanted, in order to - one day perhaps - measure up to the great artists that I admire.
That's still where I am today, after fifty-three years of making art and painting, and I hope it goes on for a long time.
