Essex, California, August 1948
In the peaceful, rural town of Essex, Sheriff Tom Venter encounters mysterious, strange events. His investigation starts with the discovery of a mutilated bull behind an old warehouse on the outskirts of the town.
Suddenly, bizarre incidents begin to unfold as a strange, green aurora is seen above Essex at night, then the sheriffs two-way and the town telephones start to malfunction for no apparent reason. Venter is unable to find a reason for the strange occurrences around his town.
The next day, wild dogs and wolves are sighted in the countryside attacking livestock as the events around the town increase. Birds commit mass suicide, then wolves and dogs turn their attack on humans. Above, haloes are seen around the sun and eagles fly in strange formation.
Frustrated that he is unable to discover the reason behind the events, Venter faces numerous challenges as he attempts to control the escalating issues of protecting the town and his daughter. As the situation worsens and panic sets in, Venter has no choice but to race against time to stop the incursion of ferocious wolves and dogs, seemingly intent on destroying the town and the people in it. He uses what little resources he has at hand to repel the attack as he enlists the help of his deputy and the townsfolk.
The invasion is imminent. The battle begins.
