Ten years in development, the World Archaeological Gazetteer is a unique catalogue or directory of over 60,000 archaeological sites, every one of which has been painstakingly verified in online global mapping systems.
The scope of the gazetteer is global; coverage includes all continents of the world except Antarctica. Each site is given a name or description, a geographical position (in degrees latitude and longitude), and many entries also offer alternative names, urls of related web sites, and full references in the academic literature. Altogether there are over 100,000 citations of over 21,000 references.
The World Archaeological Gazetteer is a four-volume publication of approximately 2,200 pages:
Volume 1: Major, Excavated and Possible Sites
Volume 2: Survey Sites and Structures
Volume 3: Approximate Locations
Volume 4: References
