The two 20-year periods of 1960-80 and 2001-21 were chosen because the former covers the changeover years from steam to diesel, and the latter covers privatization, electrification, a range of very colorful trains and a reawakening of the rail network in the southwest after the downward trend during the last years of BR.

The book amply illustrates the lines from Glasgow to Gretna down the Ayrshire and Inverclyde coast to Stranraer, along with the former Glasgow and South Western line through Kilmarnock and Dumfries.
